As of March 5th, the Great Lakes was 91.8% covered with ice!
This is a level of ice coverage not seen since 1979 when 94.7% of the lakes were ice covered! With much of the region in a deep freeze so far in 2014, some of the satellite imagery of the Great Lakes has just been incredible to see!
The past two winter seasons don’t even hold a candle to this year! Check out the annual maximum coverage in years past. 1994 was pretty icy too! But so far, 2014 has been the iciest winter since 1979! Pretty incredible!
Unfortunately, I don’t think the 94.7% number in 1979 will be broken this year, Temperatures warmed above freezing today with some VERY nice sunshine and will continue to climb Friday.
